We evaluate four different data transfer approaches currently available on modern GPUs: Standard Allocation, Pinned Memory, Data Stream, and Zero-Copy. Our results show that Data Stream is the most efficient strategy, but requires more programming effort. Zero-Copy, on the other hand, demonstrates inferior performance due to the significant latency incurred by the PCIe bus transfers for every memory access.

    Diversos estudos recentes indicam que as modificações fisiológicas de calibre nas vias aéreas que
    ocorrem durante o ciclo respiratório podem ser alteradas nas doenças respiratórias. O presente
    trabalho descreve uma nova forma de avaliar as alterações da dinâmica do sistema respiratório,
    baseada na utilização da análise da impedância respiratória (Zrs) em tempo real. Para este fim, foi
    elaborado um programa em ambiente LabVIEW 8.2 que permite esta estimativa ao longo de um ensaio
    de aproximadamente um minuto. O sistema permite a apresentação do sinal de fluxo aéreo e de
    impedância ao longo do estudo. Os resultados das análises podem ser salvos em arquivos tipo ASCII
    para posterior processamento. O programa foi utilizado para avaliar a Zrs em uma pessoa sem
    doenças respiratórias e com exame espirométrico normal. Em concordância com trabalhos anteriores,
    foi observada flutuação da Zrs ao longo do ciclo respiratório. Este resultado confirma o potencial
    científico e clinico do programa desenvolvido. Na seqüência deste trabalho, esta metodologia será
    empregada para avaliação de pacientes portadores de doenças respiratórias.

    The scientific and clinical value of a measure of complexity is potentially enormous because complexity appears to be lost in the presence of illness. The changes introduced by asthma in respiratory mechanics and control of breathing may result in modifications in the airflow pattern. These changes may be interesting clinically, since they can reduce the ability of the patient to perform daily life activities. In this paper, we examine the effect of elevated airway obstruction on the complexity of the airflow pattern of asthmatic patients using the approximate entropy method (ApEnQ). This study involved 5 healthy and asthmatics with normal spirometric exam (5), mild (5), moderate (6) and severe (5) airway obstruction. A significant (p<;0.002) reduction in ApEnQ was observed in asthmatic patients. This reduction was significantly correlated with spirometric indices of airway obstruction (R=0.60; p<;0.001). These results are in close agreement with pathophysiological fundamentals, and suggest that in asthmatic patients the airflow pattern becomes less complex, which may reduce the adaptability of the respiratory system to perform exercise associated with daily life activities. Furthermore, our findings also suggest that ApEnQ may help the clinical evaluation of asthmatic patients.
