In collaboration with communities, organizations, and corporations worldwide, TOM brings together social activism, open innovation, and open source to work directly with people in need to address areas where market forces fail.
TOM brings engineers, designers, makers innovators and problem solvers together with need-knowers (need-knower: a person with a deep understanding of a specific disability challenge, either due to personal life experience or professional choices) to develop solutions for their real-life challenges.
TOM introduced a unique experience and methodology for facilitating makeathons and inventing innovative assistive technology. The TOM:Makeathon planning process takes 2 months and is initiated with a ‘call for challenge’ and ‘call for talent’ to the local community.
After a curation process of all submissions, challenges are formed into projects and teams are assembled. Teams meet for a 3 day marathon of making to develop a working prototype solution that addresses the challenges.
In each TOM event makers and need-knowers are surrounded with cutting edge tools of modern manufacturing: 3D printers, laser cutters, electronics, traditional fabrication tools and anything they need to build the proof of concept for a solution. -
