Here's how you can navigate the emotional impact of a layoff.
Show up with honest transparency, courage and vulnerability is the first thing that comes to mind. Also, make sure you create several and different spaces for everyone to be able talk openly and ask questions. As a leader, you want to be there to listen to hard questions or reactions in the right moment and in the context every person in your team needs. Sometimes that would be a 1:1 chat, sometimes a team meeting. Make sure you provide the options people need, even when that requires a hard too coordinate choreography. Timing matters a lot as well. You'll need to do your best effort so that you don't have people in your team waiting to have a hard conversation :( I would say try to avoid recipes and be as human and contextual as possible.

You’re struggling to lead a virtual team. How can you make your facilitation skills more effective?
Engaging in an open conversation to set expectations is definitely key. A virtual team might need more individual check ins prior to more demanding team activities. In other words, never assume people will show up in a virtual meeting with the right mindset, skillset, tools and motivation to achieve a specific goal in the first place.

What are some ways to ensure that a group is making decisions collaboratively?
Build a healthy culture where everybody’s voice can be truly heard comes in the first place. And that involves all kinds of ingredients. Once you can ensure you have that, a few methods, rules and some facilitation can help. One key point for example is to be transparent about what type of conversation are we in the whole time: “Now we want to hear as many individual perspectives as possible”; “Let’s listen with the intent to understand, not to confirm your thinking or reply” are a few favorite examples. In the end it’s all about being mindful and intentional about the quality of the conversation.
